Napoleon.life is a capstone project created by Kimberly Snover in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a Master of Liberal Arts in Extension Studies at Harvard University. This project uses digital media and web technologies to tell the story behind Jacques-Louis David's, "The Coronation of Napoleon." The digital tour, coupled with the provided Educator's Guide, helps students of all ages learn about Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, Artist Jacques-Louis David, and the power of propaganda.
Is Jacques-Louis David's "Coronation" Fake News?
At first glance, The Coronation painting seems to be a straight-forward portrayal of a historical event, but appearances can be deceiving.
In 1804, Napoleon Bonaparte crowned himself emperor of France and commissioned French painter Jacques-Louis David to commemorate the occasion. At 32' long, David's canvas is one of the largest in the world. Upon seeing the finished work, Napoleon exclaimed, "What relief. What truthfulness! This is not a painting; one walks into this picture."
Behind this screen, you are invited to walk inside David's masterwork. For a tour of his painting, click on the pins that follow. Along your journey, you'll find that "truthfulness" often lies in the eye of the beholder. Let's step inside to uncover fact vs. fiction, and discover the hidden story behind one of the Louvre's most famous paintings.
